Saturday Session & What's coming up!

Saturday Session

I hope you had a chance to fit in your long run last weekend around the rain! This week we are back to our Strength and Conditioning. Remember in these sessions we are up to about 10km of running (or run/walking for those easing into it), so come along and get some nice hard efforts in.

Keen for a longrun, come along and meet us at 6am and see if there is another keen to join you! At least you have some post run beverages and breaky locked in!

When: Saturday 28th February
Time: 6am-7:30am
Where: Captain Burke Park, Story Bridge Kangaroo Point
Cost: Great value only $2 for members, $4 non-members.

Breaky/coffee afterwards.

S&C Program Recap:

The plan is to have 2 S&C Saturday Sessions per month. However, this is not nearly enough of this type of training to be effective. So, to gain the most benefit we would encourage runners to attend our session and then conduct their own sessions during the week using the guide posted on Facebook after the session.

Come along and learn how to perform each exercise correctly, plus get a great running workout that will not only improve your overall fitness and strength but will improve your running as well.

Weight will be used for these sessions, so, as we don't own 20 sets of weights, can you please bring your own set of dumbbells. If you are unsure of the amount of weight to bring here is a simple test:

You will want 40% of your max single rep bicep curl. To do this do a standing bicep curl using a weight heavy enough to only perform 1 rep. You will want 40% of this weight. Eg: I lift 30kg so I will be using a set of 12kg weights. Renae lifts 12kg, so she will be using a set of 4kg weights. If you are still unsure, use what you use during pump.classes. You can also use elastic therabands if you have them. You only need one set of weights for all exercises (e.g. 2 x ?kg dumbbells). As you get stronger, you will need to increase your weights, so if possible buy a set or dumbbells where you can add weights!

We welcome members and non-members, runners and walkers or those recovering from running injuries. We are happy to adapt exercises where required.

Sunday 29th March:  Holt Bolt

For those keen for something a little different and HEAPS of fun, why not try out the Holt Bolt Series.   We participated in one of their events last year, and it was awesome!

INFORMATION FROM THE SITE:  The Holt Bolt is a 6-8km military inspired obstacle race series on the Bald Hills flats. It is run on and around the nationally recognised cross country course of St Paul’s School. The course has it all, from the South Pine River to the vast expanses of bushland, paddocks and grass fields. Scattered throughout the course are mud flats, dams, ditches and hills making this course the ideal location for Brisbane’s first obstacle racing series. There are three Holt Bolt’s for 2015 and there will be a winner of the series as well as winners of each race.  Participants are encouraged to not only compete against others but compete against their previous times.

This series will see the introduction of a $300 cash prize for the series winners (male and female) and a Holt Bolt medal for those Bolters who complete all three races of the series. To be eligible to win the series you must have completed all obstacles in each race.

Those Bolters who sign up for the series will also receive a FREE Holt Bolt singlet valued at $25 as well as priority wave times.
Aside from the shorter distance comparative to other obstacle races in surrounding areas, the main stand out factor in The Holt Bolt races is the extensive number of obstacles incorporated into the event. Where previous obstacle races have had up to a number of kilometres between obstacles, this course has been structured so that competitors are continuously being challenged by plenty of obstacle structures placed continuously throughout the race.
The obstacles range from military inspired climbing frames, rope climbs and commando crawls through to mud runs, wall climbing, low ropes and rope traverses over water and balancing exercises along the South Pine River.
2015 inspire and be inspired!

A big thanks to Michael who was honest and open about his running journey and where it has got him today - loving life, loving running!! If you haven't had a chance to read it, check it out on facebook

Saturday Session & Strength & Conditioning

Strength and Conditioning

Well done to everybody who joined us for our Valentine's Day session last week! Hope you all felt the strength and conditioning love  !

Reminder: session 2 has been posted on our What's On Page. We recommend you do the same session 2 times a week for a month (including 2 x BRS Sat Sessions) then the next month, we issue the next program (14th March). By doing it consistently you will start to notice results in your running and general fitness, and we are structuring the programs to gradually get harder, so consistency is the key! But at any time there will be a beginners level available.

P.S. if you don't want to add in the running in the session, I have completing the sessions by doing the running sections on my bike on the windtrainer! That way I don't need a gym, I don't need to leave home...so guess what that leaves me no excuses!!

We hope after a month  now of doing program one you are starting to feel the difference.

Saturday Session

This week we head to New Farm park for a long run and parkrun!! Your once a month opportunity to see how you are progressing with your speedy 5km distance.

When: Saturday 21st February

Where: Meet at the Rotunda, New Farm Park

Time:  6am for a 55min warm up run, followed up with 7am Parkrun.

Completing a run (55mins) followed by a 5km Parkrun is a fantastic way to improve your running regardless of your goals! Don't forget to register so you can have your times tracked throughout the year to monitor your progress.
For those of you after a few more KM, why not go straight into a 3km warm down after parkrun.

Cost: $2

Markets aren't on, but I am sure we will find somewhere yummy for breaky afterwards

P.S. Prepared to get wet, but stay safe please, don't go crazy!

BRS On Tour 2016

I hope you are excited!!! We are.

We will have our quotes by the end of the month, so stay tuned, the information session is coming soon.

Thanks to those who have expressed their interest!

Hitting the Trails & Saturday Sessions

What a way to start the year!

Big congratulations to our teams who participated in the Dusk til Dawn event at Caboolture over the weekend! It is as much a physical as a mental race running around a 500m dirt track for 2 hours can do your head in.......but at the same time I love this event for its uniqueness and challenge!

Our team of Matt C, Nick, and Andy won the male 6 hr relay and Jeremy, Dan, and Sean came in 4th for the same category!

We had some die hard supporters there (with chocolate brownies apparently!) so big thanks to them for their support.

Well done team what a great start to 2015!!

Our next BRS Event is next Sunday 15th February participating in the Brisbane Road Runners Club event. Entry is on the day $10 and events on offer are 2k, 5k, 10k & 15k and the event starts at 6am.

We will be doing a few of these throughout the year to support a local club, to get regular feedback on our running fitness/times, and to get race practice.

Saturday Sessions

A good turnout for our 2nd strength and conditioning session last weekend. Reminder: the session was the same as session 1 (we ended up doing 2.5 sets!) which is posted on our What's On Page. The point is you do the same session 2 times a week for a month (including 2 x BRS Sat Sessions) then the next month, we issue the next program. By doing it consistently you will start to notice results in your running and general fitness, and we are structuring the programs to gradually get harder, so consistency is the key!  But at any time there will be a beginners level available.

Next Session is 14th Feb - YES VALENTINES DAY! Come along dressed in RED!!!
So gentlemen come along and build up those biceps for your special lady/man (or to help meet a special lady/man!) and ladies come along to tune up those sexy calves !!

This Saturday - Hitting the trails.

This Saturday is a trail day and you have options

Option 1: Enoggera Dam trails + swim

We have been there a few times before and loved it, so lets head back to the Enoggera Reservoir for a Trail run!!!  BUT even better, they have now opened it up for swimming with a special sectioned off area for a dip afterwards!!

We will ensure the group stays together by looping back at every intersection and pairing up! Everyone is challenged, everyone has fun!!

Where: Meet outside the Brisbane Forest Information Centre Carpark, Off Mt Nebo Road
OR Walkabout Creek Conference Centre.

Map reference http://goo.gl/maps/zfdL3  :
Approx 2km from the corner of Settlement Road and Waterworks Road (the Petrol Station).

What: Trail run, various terrain!
Time: Meet at 6am to 7:30am
Coaches: Matt L

Cost: $2

Bring your Togs for a dip afterwards!! I am sure it will be hot and humid enough!

Option 2: Daisy Hill

Where: Daisy Hill Conservation Park

Time: 6:00am start -7:30 ish
What: an opportunity for some fun on the trails!!

Coaches: Matt C and Liss will all be there to help you navigate the trails!

Cost: $2

How to get there:
Daisy Hill Regional Park is easily accessed from Brisbane or the Gold Coast via the Pacific Motorway (M1). From the Gold Coast, travel north along the Pacific Motorway and take exit 24. Travelling south from Brisbane along Pacific Motorway, take exit 24 and follow the signs to Daisy Hill Road and the entrance to the park.

Meet at the Upper Carpark, just before you get in the Main Gate..

As always both options will have coffee / breaky afterwards!!

Remember trail running is a great way to mix up your running regime and keeping your body and mind challenged. Varying the terrain you run on is great for injury prevention and strengthening your ankles and core. We hope to see you there.

Thanks to everybody who put in a uniform order. We will be in touch!

Happy Running
